The cottage depicted in this painting, known locally as The Watchie, is located in Catterline near Stonehaven. Once the studio of the artist Joan Eardley, it holds a quiet but significant place in Scottish art history.

The artist has returned to this site repeatedly over the years, drawn to both its atmosphere and its connection to Eardley’s practice, as well as a longstanding personal affinity with Catterline itself. The work reflects this familiarity, capturing not just a specific location, but a sense of place shaped by memory, observation, and time.

Eardley remains an important influence on the artist’s work, and her practice will be featured in Modern II at the National Galleries of Scotland from the end of June this year.
