Collection: Rob Newton

Robert Newton (b. 1964) is a British painter who studied Fine Art at the University of Sunderland. Now based in the north-east of England, he is recognised for both his expressive landscape paintings and his powerful small-scale monotypes and paintings.

Newton’s smaller works function as intimate tablets of colour and energy. At first glance they can appear spontaneous and loosely painted, almost casual in their execution. Yet closer viewing reveals a highly considered surface where each gesture, tone and mark carries intention. His process relies on intuition and a confident, instinctive approach to mark-making, allowing the image to emerge organically rather than through rigid design.

This same philosophy extends to his larger paintings. Rooted in years of practice and repetition, Newton’s work reflects a deep trust in the traditions and history of painting while remaining firmly contemporary in its outlook.

Rather than depicting a specific location, his paintings evoke remembered landscapes and lived experience. Through layered colour, movement and texture, Newton explores memory, environment and the human relationship with the natural world, embracing painting as an ongoing process of discovery.
