Sophie Botsford

Sophie Botsford is a British painter whose work is rooted in a deep connection to the rural landscape and traditions of the countryside. Raised on an arable farm in Cambridgeshire, her early surroundings continue to inform much of her subject matter, from still life arrangements and florals to game birds and animal studies.

Originally pursuing a career in land management, Botsford studied Rural Enterprise & Land Management at Harper Adams University. A pivotal shift came in 2013 when she undertook an internship with the figurative painter James Gillick. During this time, she trained in traditional oil painting techniques, learning to prepare materials by hand using methods dating back to the 17th century. This experience established a lasting appreciation for craftsmanship, process, and the material qualities of painting.

Botsford’s work reflects this foundation, combining careful observation with a sensitivity to light, texture, and composition. Her paintings often carry a quiet stillness, whether depicting a simple arrangement of objects or a more detailed animal subject.

After building her practice in Cambridgeshire, Botsford relocated to Scotland in 2023, where the landscape offered new sources of inspiration. She now works from her studio in the Cumbrian countryside, within close reach of the Lake District and Yorkshire Dales — environments that continue to shape her evolving practice.

Working primarily in oils, her portfolio ranges from intimate still lifes to larger-scale animal paintings. More recently, she has begun exploring plein air painting, responding directly to the landscapes around her.

Botsford also undertakes commissioned work, including paintings of animals and personal objects, approached with the same care and attention to detail that defines her studio practice.
