Sally Bruce Richards creates richly decorative, idiosyncratic paintings that draw viewers into a quietly enchanting world of gilded landscapes and watchful creatures. Hares pause beneath windswept trees, bees and hummingbirds gather at heavy blossom, and distant foxes and wide-eyed owls emerge against luminous, textured grounds.

Working from her studio on the remote Isle of Mull, Richards produces each piece by hand using gold, copper, and silver leaf layered with delicate rice paper. These materials lend her work a distinctive depth and luminosity, giving each painting the quality of a small, treasured object — both intricate and atmospheric.

Her practice reflects a gradual shift from formal training to intuitive response. With a background in interior design, art, and architectural drawing, Richards developed a strong foundation in structure, scale, and geometry. Since relocating to Mull, however, her work has evolved to embrace the organic forms and irregular rhythms of the surrounding landscape, shaped by weather, light, and terrain.

This balance between discipline and freedom is central to her work. Her experience as an interior designer continues to inform a refined use of colour and composition, resulting in paintings that sit naturally within contemporary interiors while retaining a strong sense of individuality.
