James Potter

James is Edinburgh based, and has been working as an artist for over 25 years, painting portraits, landscapes and seascapes. He has been known for his original oils, but has recently been exploring watercolours, working ‘en plein air’ to sketch and produce vibrant and lively paintings of Scottish landscapes and seascapes. He is also a Royal portrait painter and an official war artist.

He says of his work: “I love the challenge of painting, whether it be people or landscapes, to catch their character and realism in a traditional, expressive flurry of paint. I believe that a painting should look like a painting with visible brush marks which gives an interesting, expressive painted surface to bring out the character and feeling of the scene.”

James and his wife Tanya have enjoyed great success with their Youtube channel, where they explore the Highlands of Scotland and beyond, touring around in their 26-year old camper van, looking for striking scenes to paint.
