Collection: Daniel Roy Sharples
Daniel Roy Sharples is a contemporary British landscape painter best known for his expressive plein air paintings of urban environments. Working directly from life, he captures the changing light, atmosphere, and energy of city streets, distilling hours of movement and activity into a single image. His paintings often depict Edinburgh, Hong Kong, and locations across the UK, combining strong observation with a distinctive painterly approach.
Born in Preston in 1988, Sharples studied Illustration at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLAN) before completing a PGCE in Applied Art & Design at Edge Hill University. He spent four years teaching in Hong Kong, an experience that continues to influence his work and fascination with the character of urban spaces. Alongside his artistic practice, he is Head of Art & Design at a secondary school in Lancashire.
Painting predominantly en plein air, Sharples is drawn to the challenge of working within constantly changing environments. By painting on location rather than from photographs, he captures the vitality, atmosphere, and authenticity of a place, creating works that resonate with memory and lived experience.
His work has been exhibited widely throughout the UK, including at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters and the Royal Society of British Artists Annual Exhibition. His painting Bridesmaid received the Dry Red Press Award at the Royal Institute of Oil Painters exhibition, and he has also featured as a pod artist on Sky Arts' Landscape Artist of the Year.
