Tony Griffin

Born in Glasgow in 1963, Tony Griffin came to painting after an unconventional route. Having worked for many years as an electrician in both Scotland and Canada, he eventually returned to his first love of art, studying at the Ontario College of Art in Toronto before completing a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Painting at Glasgow School of Art.

Tony initially exhibited in Glasgow, Edinburgh and London with a series of minimalist text paintings. In more recent years, his practice has returned to a more painterly and impressionistic approach, particularly suited to the cityscapes and landscapes that now form much of his work.

His paintings are characterised by an instinctive handling of colour, atmosphere and light. Alongside scenes closer to home, his travels have drawn him repeatedly to the Mediterranean, where the intensity of the sun and heat provides a strikingly different palette and an opportunity to explore vibrant relationships between colour, architecture and landscape.
