Jason Cordingley

Jason Cordingley is an Edinburgh-based painter and art educator whose work explores the drama and vitality of the landscape through bold colour and expressive texture. He graduated with a BA (Hons) in Art in 1990, later completing an MA in Art Education at the Institute of Education, University of London. Alongside a long-standing teaching career, he has maintained a dedicated studio practice spanning painting and sculpture.

Cordingley’s landscapes are distinguished by their vibrant, almost audacious use of colour, offering a poetic interpretation of place that moves beyond direct representation. Built up through multiple layers of oil paint, glazes and impasto techniques, his surfaces are rich and tactile, creating dynamic light effects that shift across sky, sea and land. These compositions balance abstraction with recognisable forms, capturing both the physical structure and emotional atmosphere of the environment.

A recurring focus within his work is the relationship between the natural landscape and the built environment. Bridges, monuments and historic buildings emerge as focal points, punctuating the terrain and introducing a sense of scale, history and human presence within the elemental surroundings.

Working directly from experience, Cordingley spends much of his time exploring the landscape in all conditions, drawing continual inspiration from the shifting qualities of light and weather. His paintings reflect a deep engagement with the Scottish environment, conveying its intensity, unpredictability and enduring presence.

His work has been exhibited widely, including in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Oxford, London and Lisbon, and is held in collections internationally.
