Alan Cameron

Alan Cameron was a Scottish artist whose work focused primarily on the landscapes of Scotland and Italy, alongside portraiture and commissioned works. A graduate of Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, Dundee, and The University of Edinburgh, he combined a lifelong dedication to painting with a distinguished career as an architect and landscape architect. This dual practice informed a deep understanding of both the structure and spirit of the environments he depicted.

Working across a variety of media, Cameron developed a distinctive figurative and interpretative style that sought to capture the essential qualities of a place — its form, texture, colour, atmosphere, and sense of temperature. Whether portraying the rolling landscapes of the Scottish Borders and Pentland Hills or the sunlit scenery of Tuscany, Umbria, Liguria, and Venice, his work was rooted in close observation and a profound connection to the landscape.

First exhibiting a thematic solo exhibition in 1984, Cameron continued to develop a body of work characterised by sensitivity, clarity, and an enduring engagement with place. His paintings reflect not only what is seen, but what is felt, offering viewers a thoughtful and deeply personal response to the world around him. Following his passing in 2025, his remaining works continue to be exhibited, celebrating a career devoted to interpreting the character and atmosphere of the landscapes he loved.
